Team members across Mountain States are always heavily involved. Unicoi County Memorial Hospital is one of them, setting a good example with its early fundraising, including their successful second annual Relay For Life Golf Tournament.

The UCMH Relaying for a Cure team’s mission is to raise as much money as possible for the American Cancer Society so that the people in Unicoi County have the resources they need when battling cancer. UCMH set a goal of $4,500, to go toward their Relay For Life walk coming up Sept. 17, and the golf tournament raised $1,525. The team has raised more than $2,200 overall.

Stephen Wilson of the UCMH safety & security department, served as captain and director, and he called the tournament "a huge success." Wilson had special thanks for the event's sponsors, donors and volunteers.

Since the first Relay For Life in 1985, the event has raised more than $5 billion worldwide toward cancer awareness, research and recovery. There are some tremendous programs funded by Relay For Life.

Fundraising culminates in the all-night Relay walks planned in each community around the region. They can be inspiration and emotional experiences, especially the Survivors Lap when all cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track.
