JCMC's Chris Birchfield supports fellow team members with dedication, positive attitude

The annual Servant’s Heart Award, Mountain States’ highest honor, recognizes those among our team members – from frontline to leadership, volunteers and physicians – who display the heart of a servant by following Mountain States’ philosophy of patient-centered care and by going above and beyond the normal call of duty to help others, both at work and in the community.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Even though he doesn’t do direct patient care, Chris Birchfield certainly does care.

Birchfield is a 2017 Servant’s Heart winner in the frontline category. An audio-visual tech at Johnson City Medical Center since 2010, he works hard to make sure his team members have what they need for presentations, meetings and events. By making things work smoothly behind the scenes, he allows others to focus on being the best they can be.

Chris is known for going beyond his normal job duties to make sure sound and video are working properly. He sets up equipment early and stays late if needed, and demonstrates tremendous patience with team members of various departments as they ask for assistance recording testimonials or making training videos. He has been known to spend extra time making copies of videos or photos to give to those involved.

Team members are more engaged when they feel supported, respected and appreciated. “Chris provides this kind of environment wherever he is,” stated his nomination submission. “His smile and good nature contribute to a better day for everyone.”

Any time Chris notices something else that needs to be completed, such as room set-up, assistance with food prep or other things, he assists without hesitation or complaint. He goes above and beyond to ensure the end product is beyond satisfactory. One co-worker said of him, “His attitude and dedication to assisting all other team members are unmatched.”

Chris demonstrates a Servant’s Heart at work and in his community. He is actively involved in his church, working with the youth program and other activities, and values time with his family. He is a caregiver to his aging parents, and regardless of issues outside of work, he always maintains a positive attitude. Chris is among those who demonstrate the heart of a servant in everyday life, inside and outside of work.
