Midwifery program: History made in the Family Birth Center at Indian Path!

Patti Wilson, CNM (certified nurse midwife)KINGSPORT, Tenn. – At Indian Path Medical Center, we have worked diligently to provide a midwifery program to serve a population of women in the community who have voiced their desire to have a midwife as part of their delivery process. We are proud to announce that on March 28 at 3:15 p.m. we had our first midwife delivery!

The Family Birth Center would like to welcome Patti Wilson, certified nurse midwife (CNM), as the first midwife to participate in this new service at Indian Path. The mission of the Family Birth Center is to provide the best possible care to mothers and their babies by making their delivery experience what they want it to be, while producing optimal outcomes.

Providing midwifery services is just another way we can fulfill this mission. Midwives work closely with obstetricians who are there to support them at all times. Let me share some of the concepts that are promoted in the Midwives Model of Care.

The Midwives Model of Care is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life processes. The model includes:

  •  Monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle.

  •  Providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support

  •  Minimizing technological interventions

  •  Identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention

The application of a woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma and Cesarean sections by:

  •  Promoting a continuous and compassionate partnership

  •  Acknowledging a person’s life experiences and knowledge

  •  Including individualized methods of care and healing guided by the best evidence available

  •  Involving therapeutic use of human presence and skillful communication

Midwives honor the normalcy of women's life-cycle events. We believe in:

  •  Watchful waiting and non-intervention in normal processes
  •  Appropriate use of interventions and technology for current or potential health problems
  •  Consultation, collaboration and referral with other members of the health care team as needed to provide optimal health care
