Dr. Bryan S. Helsel joins MSMG Cardiovascular/Thoracic Surgery in JC

Bryan S. Helsel, MD, FACS, FCCP, FACCJOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Mountain States Medical Group Cardiovascular/Thoracic Surgery welcomes Dr. Bryan S. Helsel to the team.


Dr. Helsel attended East Tennessee State University James H. Quillen College of Medicine and returns to the region after completing extended training in his field. He completed his general surgery residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and his thoracic surgery fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.


Dr. Helsel graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1994 for his undergraduate degree. A self-proclaimed “Army brat,” he served as an attack helicopter pilot, and then transitioned to his medical career. He is now retiring from the Army after 28 years of service.


“My father and I both retired from the Army as cardiac surgeons,” Dr. Helsel said. “As a child, I had many experiences through him that inspired and focused me on the path to becoming a physician and a surgeon. I love sitting down with patients and turning complex, life-changing health challenges into positive experiences.”


Dr. Helsel is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery serves people who have conditions of the heart, lungs, esophagus, diaphragm and great vessels (cardiovascular and thoracic diseases).
