Arthritis Foundation’s free ‘Walk With Ease’ program offers great way to get active, improve fitness

With the start of the new year coming up, it’s the perfect time for getting into better shape. If you want to increase your fitness – especially if you have arthritis – try a free program called “Walk With Ease” that can really make a difference.

This program from the Arthritis Foundation is offered by Mountain States Health Alliance through its Fit4Life wellness program and Heart & Soul Program. It can be done as a self-guided course or in a six-week, community-based setting at the Health Resources Centers (HRC) in Kingsport or Johnson City.

The HRC program includes classroom instruction and stretching exercises as well as opportunities for walking. The class teaches how to develop a customized walking plan, stay motivated, manage pain and learn to exercise safely. Participants can use what they learn to implement their own walking regimen, and can use tools from the course to track their progress.

Walk With Ease has been proven to:

• Reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis;

• Increase balance, strength and walking pace;

• Build confidence in your ability to be physically active;

• Improve overall health.

Walk With Ease is not just for those with arthritis; it can help anyone improve overall health and safely make physical activity part of your everyday life. The program will help motivate you to get in great shape and allow you to walk safely and comfortably.

To complete the program on your own, contact Melissa Johnston with the Heart & Soul Program at 423-302-3044 and you’ll receive a free workbook and pedometer to get started. You can also register online at

Or if you’d rather participate in a group setting, the Health Resources Centers in both Kingsport and Johnson City will offer this six-week program starting on Jan. 8, 2018. Class leaders are certified by the Arthritis Foundation. At these group sessions, you’ll receive recipes to help reduce inflammation and tips for exercises that help improve strength for walking. Upon finishing the course, all participants get a free cookbook with arthritis-friendly recipes.

To join the HRC classes, sign up by Jan. 4 by calling 844-488-7827 (STAR).
