The Cancer Center at Johnston Memorial Hospital opened with radiation oncology in April of 2007 and expanded to offer medical oncology a little over a year later. The Cancer Center is now able to support those services with access to a wide range of specialists, diagnostic radiology and laboratory services, cancer education, screening programs, nutritional evaluations, genetic testing and the Triumph Cancer Navigator program.

In 2016, there were 16,000 patient encounters in medical oncology and 9,000 in radiation oncology.  The medical oncology providers managed the care of 1,781 patients. In 10 years the Cancer Center has grown to a staff of four physicians, four mid-level providers, three sites including Marion and Lebanon, and nearly 50 team members from oncology, registration, pharmacy, lab and other departments at the Johnston Memorial site alone.

At the 10th anniversary celebration, Stan Hickson, VP and CEO of the Northeast Market, made opening remarks and recognized the hard work and dedication of the Cancer Center team, particularly Dr. Bernard Tisdale, the founding oncologist at the Regional Cancer Center at JMH, and Sonji Heltzel, a radiation therapist who has been with the Cancer Center team since right after the doors first opened.

All providers were given marble paperweights that were specially engraved with their names and a drawing of the Regional Cancer Center at JMH. Attendees of the open house enjoyed heavy hors d’oeuvres and refreshments and were offered tours of the Cancer Center.

Congratulations to the Regional Cancer Center at Johnston Memorial Hospital for 10 years of amazing, lifesaving service to the community!
