Mountain States' Ken Harr named finalist for national safety/security award

Ken Harr is Mountain States’ corporate director of security, safety & emergency management.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Ken Harr, Mountain States’ corporate director of security, safety & emergency management, has been named a national finalist for Campus Safety magazine’s 10th annual Director of the Year Award.

The award honors a hospital, school or university campus police chief, director of public safety and security, emergency manager or other administrator responsible for campus protection who goes above and beyond the call of duty – demonstrating outstanding leadership skills, ingenuity, selflessness and overall achievement.

“Ken is very deserving of consideration for this honor,” said Bill Alton, Mountain States’ vice president for facilities and construction management. “I would give him the award today if it were up to me. He is absolutely the best safety and security director I’ve worked with in my 30-year career.”

The criteria for the award includes bringing out the best in officers and staff, keeping morale high even under difficult circumstances, developing initiatives that save money, finding innovative solutions and fostering good community relations.

One of Harr’s top achievements has been helping the safety and security department earn Program of Distinction Security Department Accreditation from the IAHSS (International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety). Only a handful of systems and hospitals earn this accreditation each year. It requires officers to take hours of extra education and testing on topics about security that are specific to health care, and the higher their rank, the more education and testing required – so Harr had to pass more testing than anyone on the force.

“His training and knowledge are unsurpassed in his profession,” Alton said, “and Ken’s leadership skills and abilities allow him to keep his staff engaged at the highest level. He has excelled in his position during some challenging times and he continues to set a high standard for his team. He demands the best from himself and his team. He’s been a real asset to Mountain States and the people we serve.”

“I consider it an honor to be a finalist and to represent Mountain States,” Harr said. “I wouldn’t be successful in this role if it wasn’t for God, family support, mentor Bill Alton, our security team and our emergency management team.”

The winner will be announced Campus Safety Conference East in Herndon, Virginia, July 19-20.
