The first week of November is National Medical Staff Services Awareness Week, created to acknowledge and thank medical services professionals for playing an important role in our nation’s healthcare system.

Say thanks this week to our TMs in central service & sterile processing

Oct. 9-15 is International Central Service & Sterile Processing Week. The 2016 theme is “Central Service Professionals: QUALITY You Can Count On.” International Central Service Week recognizes the committed specialists that fill CS departments and make a difference in patient care throughout the United States.

With your tireless dedication, your healthcare customers can count on clean and sterile instruments being delivered consistently – and on time. With your ongoing due diligence and dependable equipment and process monitoring, surgeries can be performed without delay. And with your unwavering adherence to industry standards, best practices, and policies and procedures, patient safety is never sacrificed. All of this is because of you.

Thank you for all you do! We appreciate you, and hope you have a GREAT week!

National Accounts Payable Week is Oct. 10-14; thanks to our hard-working TMs who make sure the bills get paid!

Oct. 10-14 is National Accounts Payable week. These folks are many times the forgotten heroes, but as an organization we couldn’t survive without them. They pay for literally every supply, service, utility, equipment, lease, etc. for all of Mountain States Health Alliance.

They also process all team member reimbursements. On an average, they process approximately 250,000 invoices and cut over 133,000 checks annually. If you have a moment and see or talk to one of these shining stars, please let them know how much you appreciate all that they do.

HRC locations celebrate Battle at Bristol

Our Health Resources Centers in Johnson City and Kingsport presented some healthy tailgate treats on the Friday before the Battle at Bristol, the football game at Bristol Motor Speedway that pitted Tennessee against Virginia Tech on Sept. 10.

Crystal West, RDN, HRC dietitian, prepared Energy Bites and Cowboy Caviar tailgate snacks for both HRC locations (pictured above). They had about 100 visitors at each office. Among the visitors was local celebrity musician “Fiddlin’” Carson Peters, shown here with Crystal and Pam King, RN.

The HRC is located on the first floor of The Mall at Johnson City, and on the second floor of the Kingsport Town Center mall.

JCMC's pulmonary renal oncology ICU earns award for outstanding care

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Johnson City Medical Center’s pulmonary renal oncology ICU was recently recognized with a Zenith Award for its outstanding care.

Over the past year, the staff did an in-depth process improvement project, improving the entire care process including forms, policies, order sets and training. JCMC also upgraded equipment to NxStage machines to replace older models, and four ICU nurses attended four days of intensive training for the new machines and then trained the rest of the staff.

The improved processes and equipment helped the staff work collaboratively as a clinical integration group and helped bring about earlier and increased use of the equipment for CRRT (continuous renal replacement therapy).

The Zenith Award was created by NxStage Medical to recognize the outstanding renal care that ICU staffs provide to their patients.

The independent review of Mountain States’ achievements that led to the award noted that: “You outlined a program that not only tried to get better functioning equipment in their opinion, but also created a community of caregivers who strive to provide the best for their patient population. Nurses are the ones who identified the issues and clearly drove this change in the CRRT program and changed nursing practice and took full ownership of all aspects of the change. … Creating a better working relationship among caregivers and creating a culture of collaboration is of utmost importance to better outcomes and this submission speaks volumes to this.”

Effective Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, if dictating a pre-admission H&P report without an encounter number, please enter eight 2’s (22222222). Report will be linked to correct patient once they are admitted or registered.

NOTE: This has been changed from entering all 9’s for pre-admit H&Ps to entering all 2’s due to a quirk that the keypad 9 also disconnects causing heartburn for providers getting disconnected from the system.

We appreciate our biomedical techs as we recognize Healthcare Technology Management Week

The biomedical equipment technicians (BMETs) and clinical engineers at Mountain States join healthcare technology professionals from across the country in observing Healthcare Technology Management Week, May 22-28. This annual celebration is sponsored by the Technology Management Council of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation

In a time of rapidly evolving healthcare technology, healthcare facilities must keep pace by providing quality, well-trained professionals who understand the complexity of medical equipment operation and applications. Biomedical equipment technicians, clinical engineers, and other professionals in healthcare technology management (HTM) serve an important role in this regard.

These healthcare professionals research, recommend, install, inspect, and repair medical devices and other complicated medical systems. They also advise and train others about the safe and effective use of medical devices, thereby controlling healthcare costs and improving patient safety.

We thank our biomedical equipment technicians across Mountain States for the important work they do to keep us going and allow us to serve the people in this region.

Covered Bridge 5K Run and 3K Walk coming up June 11 to benefit SSH Foundation; registration open

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. – The annual Covered Bridge 5K Run and 3K Walk benefiting Sycamore Shoals Hospital Foundation is set for Saturday, June 11, at 8 a.m. Registration will be located in the heart of downtown at the City Hall parking lot on Hattie Avenue between Riverside and Sycamore streets. Both races will finish at the same location after crossing through the historic covered bridge.

All proceeds from the race benefit the SSH Foundation, which helps to fund needed equipment, supplies and programs for Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Last year 285 people participated in the 5K run and 3K walk, and $6,100 was raised for patient needs at SSH.

The course is fairly flat with slightly rolling hills so it should be a good course for a PR.

Participants can pre-register for the race through June 5 at runtricities.org under the “Event Calendar.” The discounted early registration fee for the Covered Bridge run is $20 through June 3, and $25 from June 4 through race day. T-shirts are guaranteed for pre-registrants and will be available, while supplies last, for those registering after June 3.

Late registration for both events and packet pick-up for pre-registered participants will be held on Friday, June 10, from 5-7 p.m. and on race day from 6:30-7:30 a.m. at the City Hall parking lot on Hattie Avenue.

After the race, awards will be given at the Covered Bridge Festival stage for the top overall male and female runners and walkers and also for the top three in each age group.  The race is sponsored by Sycamore Shoals Hospital, CenturyLink, Citi, and Watauga Lakeshore Marina and Resort. Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is April 24-30; thank you to the lab!

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, April 24-30 this year, is an annual celebration of the laboratory and histology professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in every aspect of health care. This year’s slogan is "Laboratory Professionals GET RESULTS."

Since lab professionals often work behind the scenes, the dedicated efforts of our professionals often go unnoticed by the general public, as well as by the very institutions we serve. The level of quality is validated upon each audit/inspection requiring all laboratories to maintain continual service readiness.

Our medical laboratory team is inclusive of our pathology physicians and team members with state licenses as applicable, associate degrees, baccalaureate degrees, national certifications and national specialty certifications. Your laboratories are licensed and maybe inspected by a variety of regulatory and state agencies as applicable such as the College of American Pathologists, the State of Tennessee Laboratory Licensing Board, the State of New York Laboratory Licensing Board, the US Food and Drug Administration, CLIA, Joint Commission, and Contract Research Organizations.

Quality Control and Proficiency testing is performed on every analyte tested within our laboratory as well as with our point-of-care testing throughout the year to assure quality patient results. Medical laboratory testing plays a crucial role in the patient’s care with an estimated 60-70 percent of all decisions regarding a patient's diagnosis and treatment, hospital admission and discharge based on laboratory test results.

We appreciate and thank all of our phlebotomists, clinical laboratory technicians, medical laboratory technicians, medical technologists, technical specialists, pathology technicians, cytopathology prep technicians, histology technicians and histology technologists, doctors and leadership.

Dr. Brock Blankenship JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – ETSU Quillen College of Medicine recently named Johnston Memorial Hospital emergency department physician Dr. Brock Blankenship as the director of the Center for Experiential Learning, headquartered on the Mountain Home Veterans Affairs campus.

In his new role, Blankenship, a 2004 Quillen graduate, will assist in leading the effort to advance the interprofessional simulation program at the university.

JMH’s Vanburen honored by Jonesborough Repertory Theatre

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Nikki Vanburen of Johnson City was recently honored by the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre for the outstanding service she has provided as a volunteer.

Nikki Vanburen Vanburen first got involved when her son, Alex, started performing at the theatre. She assists in various capacities such as at the stage door, selling tickets and even popping popcorn.

The staff of JRT reports that, “Words just don't seem adequate enough to express how thankful we are for Nikki. She is a joy to work with and a wonderful representative of the ‘community’ part of our community theater. We are all so grateful she chooses to support what we do whenever she can.”

On top of spending countless hours volunteering at the theater and watching her son perform, Vanburen serves as chief nursing officer at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va. She started her career at Mountain States Health Alliance 15 years ago at the Johnson City Medical Center. She came to Johnston Memorial Hospital in 2011 as the Director of Emergency Services and in 2013 was promoted to her current position of CNO.

“We are thankful to have someone like Nikki who is very driven and motivated to serve the community outside of her responsibilities at JMH,” said Sean McMurray, JMH’s CEO. “Nikki goes above and beyond and excels in everything she does for us and we join with the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre in recognizing her dedication to serving others.”

Ruby Barnett, LPN, honored with monthly Hospice Caregiver Award

Left to right: J. Keith Biddix, co-manager Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services; Ruby Barnett, LPN, January Hospice Caregiver Award Winner; Hannah B. Counts, RN; Billy Gillenwater, co-manager Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services; Laura Graham, community relations for Tetrick Funeral Home/Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Mountain States’ Ruby Barnett, LPN, was recently recognized for her work with Mountain States Hospice. In January she was given the monthly Hospice Caregiver Award presented by Tetrick Funeral Home, Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services, and Oak Hill Funeral & Cremation Services.

Ruby was nominated by Hannah B. Counts, RN, with Mountain States Hospice, who had the following to say about why she nominated Ruby:

“Ruby Barnett is worthy of every award available for nursing.  Every day she shows love, compassion, patience, and knowledge to every patient and their family members. She knows that nursing extends past the patient and also involves the patient’s family. Ruby is a patient advocate and makes sure every patient's need is taken care of in a very timely manner. She cares for the patients as if they were her own family. She not only cares for their health but makes sure their basic needs are met.

“Ruby goes beyond the call of duty. This means working long hours and taking care of situations that often go unnoticed. She never complains about this because she loves our patients and family members dearly. She is the example of bringing loving care to healthcare. She is a mentor and has taught me so much about hospice – from disease process, medication use and most importantly listening to and supporting patients. She is the kind of nurse I would want to take care of my loved ones. I am blessed to work alongside Ruby Barnett. She is daily making a difference in the lives of those in our community!”

Important information on how central line infection is defined

Please note there’s been a change in how central line infections are defined by the CDC. This will have a direct impact on our CLABSI rate, so please read the following:

The National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) is a section of the CDC that determines the definitions of hospital associated infections that we are required to follow by TJC, CMS and state health departments.  Every January they release modifications, clarifications and sometimes changes to the definitions.  This year they have added the following statement to the current CLABSI definition:

A positive blood specimen meeting LCBI criteria, that is accompanied by documentation of observed or suspected patient accession into vascular access lines, within the BSI infection window period, will be considered an LCBI, but not CLABSI for NHSN reporting purposes.

We are required to report blood stream infection that are related to a central line (CLABSI), but not BSI that are not (LCBI – lab confirmed bloodstream infection).  This is a positive change for our facilities, especially with the IV drug abuse rates continuing to increase. In order for our data to be most accurate, documentation from a health care worker must occur in the patient record during the infection window for each positive blood culture.  The infection window is defined as 3 calendar days before and 3 calendar days after the first positive diagnostic test (blood culture in this case).

Please note, this documentation must occur in the patient record so we need to either witness or have a very high level of suspicion that this is occurring.

In summary, please be aware of this new definition, and document if you think a patient has been accessing his/her IV line inappropriately.
